Topic: Cycles.

Sub-topic: Life cycles of a butterfly and frog

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:-

· Investigate the main stages in the life cycle of a butterfly and a frog which includes the egg, larva and adult stages.

· To sequence and label the life stages of the butterfly and frog.

· Finish each of the four drawings around the line of symmetry. Butterfly Life Cycle Pictures: egg, larva or caterpillar, pupa, and adult.

· Explore the importance of a butterfly and a frog in the food chain of the habitat.

Title: Life cycles of a butterfly and a frog
Set induction	Teacher asks the pupils if they have seen butterflies and frogs. Ask them to describe how the butterflies look like and where they can find the butterflies. Ask the pupils to describe the characteristics of a butterfly and a frog that they already know. Then invite the pupils into a story telling session. By doing this, pupils will be able to see the pictures of the life-stages of a butterfly and a frog.
Stage 1	When the story telling session is done, teacher should explain to the pupils each of the life-stages with the aids of pictures. Some pupils may need some concrete materials so that they can relate their existing knowledge. Butterflies have four main stages in their life cycles, and they are in the following order: Egg stage – First an adult butterfly lays oval eggs on specific kinds of leaves. Caterpillar stage – After the butterfly lays eggs, little caterpillars emerge from them. They eat a lot and grow big on the host plant. Chrysalis (Cocoon) Stage – The caterpillars shed their skins (this process is called molting) a few times, and finally grow a hard covering and lie inactive. This is the cocoon or chrysalis stage. Adult Stage – Finally from the cocoon, emerges a fully grown butterfly, that resembles its parents. Teacher shows a video of the life cycle of a butterfly Life cycle of a butterfly
Stage 2	The life stages of a frog Egg stage: Female frogs lay a large number of eggs which look like a mass of jelly. Tadpole Stage: The eggs hatch and out of them come little frogs or little toads that look like fishes. They are called tadpoles (or pollywogs). They have tails and they swim and breath like a fish in water using their gills. Adult Stage: Gradually the tadpole loses its tail and forms front and hind legs. Stage 3	Teacher divide the pupils into 4 groups that is 5 person in a group Each of the group will be named: Butterfly 1, Butterfly 2, Frog 1 and Frog 2. For the butterfly groups, they will be doing a small research on a life cycle of a butterfly Whereas, the frog groups will be doing a small research on the life cycle of a frog Each group will be ask to find pictures of each stage of the life cycles and explore the sites to get the information of each stages. Each group also have to find the importance of the two animals in the food chain within their habitat Then each group will be presenting what they have found.
Stage 4	For this stage, it is where the pupils will do the online activities. Stage 5	Here are for the hand written worksheet. The pupils will label the stages, correctly sequence the life stages of butterfly and frog and draw the symmetrical of the butterfly. Refer to appendices for the worksheet.
Closure	Teacher shows again the PowerPoint presentation of the butterfly and frog life stages. Question and answer session.

Aims of Primary Science Education in Brunei Darussalam

Here i want to share the new Upper Primary Science Curriculum aims by the Curriculum Development Department, of Brunei Darussalam, 2002:

To provide pupils with enjoyable science experiences which build on their natural interest and curiosity in their environment;
To provide pupils with the basic knowledge and understanding of science concepts to help them understand themselves and the environment they live in;
To develop in pupils the basic science process skilss (including the use of ICT) and to inculcate positive attitudes and values that are necessary for scientific enquiry and problem solving;
to appreciate the importance of protecting and conserving the environment from the personal and social (Melayu Isalm Beraja) perspectives; and to enhance understanding of Islamic values among pupils so as to enable them to develop their spiritual, physical, intellectual, social and aesthetic well being in a balanced way.

ICT in science

Hey again.. one interesting question which come into my mind actually as a student who is taking teaching course is how do we make teaching and learning science interesting and meaningful?

Well let me share some friends’ past experience with all of you which some of you might experiences the same situation and maybe some of you might experience different situation. During his primary school level, he DOES NOT like science very much. why? These are some of the reasons:

Do not understand what the topic is all about
learning base on reading the book only
Learning base on doing the exercise given from the workbook
No practical acitvity
All informations are given by the teachers
The students do not have the ooportunity to learn the topic by themselves
Always in the classroom environment

So what can we conclude here?

Teaching science to the children does not mean finishing the syllabus or for the exams only, however, inorder to make the students understand and have the idea of what science is, teacher has to teach science in interesting and meaningful ways. Since science are related to our lives on earth in our everyday life, children might have lots of question regarding science that teahcers have to prepare themselves in answering their questions.

From the websites, nowadays there are lots of useful resources which we could share among ourselves in our teaching and learning. We don’t have to rely on 1 specific teaching or learning style only, for which there is no such thing as ’1 specific way of teaching n learning’. From what i have learned before, teacher could use several of teaching strategies in their teaching to make the lesson more interesting and alive.

Before we implement certain strategies, we have to know what topic that we are going to teach and the nature of our students so that both the teacher and students will benefit from the teaching and learning process. Some of the Teaching and Learning Strategies that might be interesting are:

Debate
Demonstration (example of Demonstration strategy in Science done by my colleague, wannah http://wannah.wordpress.com/)
Quiz
Rhyme
Drama
Song
Interactive board (ACTIVstudio)
Games
Cooperative learning
Round Table etc..

ICT in education

For a start, i am sure all of us aware that this is a new era in life as well as education. If 10 years ago, we were mostly taught and learned in traditional ways which is ‘Chalk n Talk’, nowadays, we could find lots of interesting ways and strategies that teachers could use in varies their teaching styles. Student might also find some more interesting activities which they can use in their learning.

Using ICT in our teaching shows that we are aware of ICT life nowadays that not only adult knows how to use it, but children as early as kindergarten knows how to use computers to do their school works. As for example, a nephew of a friend who is in the kindergarten 2 right now in 1 of the private school here, knows how to make activities like a poster using the print artist program by himself. So, there are no other excuse, for not using ICT in teaching and learning if ICT makes it easier and convenience

hey! i’m new here.. for the intro to my blog, basically, you will find infos and resources to the teaching and learning materials that would be useful for the teachers as well as students.
